Will I Ever Be Satisfied?

WILL I EVER BE SATISFIED?

Guest Writer – Susan Tannock

I can’t get no satisfaction… (insert shower singing)

The immortal words of Mick Jagger, they seem to come and haunt me at least once a year.

I’ve wondered, will I ever be someone who will be settled and happy with what I am doing – will I ever be satisfied?

I’ve always found myself asking, ‘but what now?’ What’s next? Is there something better or more exciting for me to be doing? Something more meaningful perhaps?

Skip ahead and discover how to find your calling in 3 simple steps>>

Every time I’ve started in a job I’ve been so excited and energised by the prospect of possibilities… and then the day to day starts to settle in and I feel like I’m just going through the motions again. Not in a state of flow, more monotony.

I’ve had this conversation with a friend of mine a lot and it seems I’m not alone. And it’s funny because after we finish bitching and moaning about the situation, we inevitably asked ourselves the same question each time – ‘why am I doing this?’

And that’s where we stopped. We never took the time to delve a little deeper and really understand why.

But recently I did exactly that.

Usually when asked, ‘what’s holding you back?’, many people will answer as we did – responsibility, financial needs, self confidence, expectations… but how many of these factors are real vs perceived.

The truth is, as humans we’re an adaptable bunch – the grey matter in our head helps us navigate problems and find solutions. So really, these things aren’t shackles, they’re mere hurdles.

But have you ever watched a hurdles race? The competitors look ahead, not down. It’s easier to navigate the problem when they’re looking at the end goal, the finish line. And just like a hurdler in a race, if you are so busy focused on the hurdle in front of you, chances are you are going to trip up, or let the world go by you.

You need to understand where you’re running to.

For me, my discovery was that my idea of success was actually out of line with what really drove me.

It was a pretty standard Gen Y spiel – financial success, responsibility, power etc. If that’s what drives you, that’s cool, I’m not judging you – it’s just not for me.

Nope my success is living more in line with my purpose. My purpose is two fold – ‘helping people’ and ‘creating’ – specifically ‘helping people to create things’. That’s where I find my ‘satisfaction’.

If you’ve got Mick Jagger stuck in your head like I did then begin discovering your passions and purpose and let it guide you to your ‘sweet satisfaction’. Get started today, with my:
